The term Saxon was used by Continental writers in th late 8th century to distinguish the Saxons of Britain from those of the European continent , whom St . Bede had called Antiqui Saxones ( ? Old Saxons ? ) .
Archaeological evidence suggests that the first migrants to from the Germanic areas of mainland Europe antedated the Roman withdrawal from Britain about 410 CE .
The Anglo - Saxons were descendants of Germanic migrants , Celtic inhabitants of and Viking and Danish invaders .
Anglo - Saxon kingdoms spoke distinctive dialects , which evolved over time and together became known as Old English .
The period known as the Ages is mainly because written sources for the early years of Saxon invasion are scarce . However , most historians now prefer the terms 'early middle ages' or 'early medieval period' .
The Anglo - Saxons brought their own religious beliefs , but the arrival of Saint Augustine in AD converted most of the country to Christianity .
