nucleus metals molecules protons compounds atomic decompose iron allotropes malleable brittle physical electrons nonmetals sulfur heat neutrons chemically

The atom is composed of a surrounded by orbiting negatively charged . Inside the nucleus are positively charged protons and neutral .
Each element has a unique number of . The number of protons in an atom is called its number .
Atoms can join together by chemical bonds to form . Hydrogen molecules consist of two atoms of hydrogen joined together . Ozone molecules consist of three atoms of oxygen joined together . Water molecules consist of two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen joined together .
Elements can be classified as , nonmetals and metalloids . This classification scheme is based on their and chemical properties .
Metals are shiny and and are good conductors of electricity and heat . Non - metals are dull and and are non - conductors of electricity and poor conductors .
Common metals include copper , zinc , gold , lead , mercury , iron and silver . Common include hydrogen , fluorine , chlorine , sulfur , phosphorus and carbon .
Each element has its own symbol . The symbols for some common elements are : Cu ( copper ) , Zn ( zinc ) , Au ( gold ) , Hg ( mercury ) , Fe ( ) , Ag ( silver ) , H ( hydrogen ) , F ( fluorine ) , Cl ( chlorine ) , S ( ) , P ( phosphorus ) and C ( carbon ) .
Some elements exist in different structural forms called . Thus carbon can exist as diamond and graphite .
Different elements can combine chemically to form . Compounds contain a fixed number of atoms of each element and their properties differ from their component elements .
Compounds differ from mixtures . In mixtures the components are not bonded . Thus alloys of metals are mixtures as the components can be readily separated .
Heat or electrical energy must be used to a compound back into its component elements .
