Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Also known as African American History Month, the event grew out of “Negro History Week,” the brainchild of noted historian Carter G. Woodson and other prominent African Americans. Since 1976, every U.S. president has officially designated the month of February as Black History Month. Other countries around the world, including Canada and the United Kingdom, also devote a month to celebrating Black history.

He led the league in stolen bases that season and was named Rookie of the Year. 2 The celebration of this month began as "Negro History Week" which was created in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson, a noted African American historian, scholar, educator and publisher. It became a month-long celebration in 1976. 3 In 1940, Hattie McDaniel was the first African American performer to win this award in the film industry's highest honor for her portrayal of a loyal slave governess in the movie Gone With the Wind. 4 In 2008, he became the first Black president of the United States. 5 She was credited with helping to spark the Civil Rights movement when she refused to give up her public bus seat to a white man in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955, inspiring the Montgomery Bus Boycott. 6 John Mercer Langston was the first Black man to become a _________ when he passed the bar in Ohio in 1854 and later became one of the first African Americans ever elected to public office in America. 7 Spurred by growing racial violence in the early 20th century, and particularly by 1908 race riots in Springfield, Illinois, a group of African American leaders joined together to form a new permanent civil rights organization, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. 8 Robert Johnson became the first African American billionaire when he sold this cable station he founded in 2001. 2 5 4 7 6 1 8
