For another , metaphors can express ideas in a way that makes them easier to comprehend . Instead of spending paragraphs trying to explain love , a writer can describe love with a , such as this one by Paulo Coelho : " Love is a disease no one wants to get rid of . " However , there are some things to remember when it to metaphors . First , don't overdo them . A passage endless elaborate metaphors will be hard to read . Here's a mixed metaphor : " Helen was a bright light , and the men she attracted were thirsty travelers , for a drink . " Readers will find this sentence strange .
