William Shakespeare was born on or around 23rd April in the house preserved as his in Henley Street , Stratford - upon - Avon . The record of his in the church register is on 26th April .
Contrary to impressions given in some of the older , Shakespeare came from good middle - class on both sides . His mother , Mary Arden , was one of the eight daughters of a substantial of Wilmcote , where the Arden farmstead may still be seen , his father , John Shakespeare was a and respected tradesman , who took an active part in municipal affairs .
