Should workers personalize their desks ?

Many companies are banning personal items on office desks , but it might not be good for workers .

Employees spend a lot of time at work , between 40 to 60 hours per week . So , it is not unusual for them to want to their space by bringing a plant or some photos of their families to work . But some employers have this in the office because they want the space to look clean and impersonal . They think this will improve because you have only things that you need at your desk and you will focus more on your job .

One British company , Haddington Knight , uses science to improve business performance . They spoke to workers in a call center . In the beginning , the workers could put anything on their desks ; six years later , they could not even bring their own cups or even use paper . As these office rules became , employees' job satisfaction levels got worse . " In my first couple of years , I was a lot more energetic and productive than in my last two years , " said one of the employees , " I was feeling better about my work when they ? management ? weren't so . ?

Haddington Knight has done a lot of research into office personalization . They say that workers who put one picture or a plant on their desk are 15% more productive than those who don't . Employees who can personalize their own area in any way they want are up to 25% more productive than those who must work in a stricter space . Having our own personal things on our desk makes us work harder because we feel more comfortable , relaxed , and less like machines . And when we are happier , we are better workers .

So , if there is a lot of research that shows we are more productive with these types of desks , then why don't all companies let their workers personalize the office ? These ideas come from two important management theories that became popular in the 1990s and are still used today : Six Sigma and Lean . The idea is that you have everything you need to do your job on your desk . So if something is not needed for work . for example personal pictures or plants , then it is a .

Many managers learn that this is the best way to work in an office , but Craig Knight , a psychologist and the founding director Haddington Knight , believes it does not work . He says managers could let employees in one department personalize their desks and ask the workers if they are happier or more productive , and then compare the results with other departments . If your boss cares about you , he / she should let you bring a book , a photo , or a calendar to work .
