How NASA inventions impact our lives

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration has created many really amazing inventions since it was founded in 1958 . They have developed an assortment of technologies to solve problems for astronauts in space that we find useful here on earth . Using scientists from different fields such as astronomy , physics , chemistry , biology , engineering , and mechanics , they work together to issues . In fact , NASA has a Technology Utilization Program that helps companies develop space technology into products that anyone can buy . Out of every 1 , 000 patents ? the legal right to make or sell a product ? that are given in the U . S . , one is for a NASA project . Below is a list of some well known ones . Let's see how many you recognize .

? Memory foam : Do you have a nice bed ? You can thank NASA for memory foam mattresses and pillows , which they designed for crash protection for pilots and passengers and to make long journeys more comfortable . Since then , memory foam has been used in helmets , shoes , amusement park rides , furniture , and even NASCAR seats .

? Freeze drying : One of the concerns NASA had for its astronauts on the Apollo missions was food . They developed a technique called freeze drying , which involved cooking food , freezing it very quickly , and then removing the ice crystals . The food keeps 98 percent of its nutrition , but only 20 percent of the weight .

? Water purification : For the astronauts to in space , they need access to regular clean water . The scientists in the 1970s made iodine cartridges to filter the water . But these days , they have created an even more amazing system of filtering water ? from human respiration , sweat , and urine ! These water filters are important in areas of the world where there is little clean water or where , such as hurricanes or earthquakes , have occurred .

? Petroleum remediation : This is a product that NASA developed to help clean up oil spills in the oceans . They are tiny balls made from beeswax with a little hole in the center . The water cannot go into the ball , but the oil can and it after some time . Nowadays , the tiny balls can be used to clean up oil spills in car washes , parking garages , train tracks , or even in your home where your heating oil is kept .

? Medical devices : The WARP 10 is a small LED device that helps people who have muscle problems . It is being used by soldiers who have small and pains when they are at war . The WARP 75 is used by people who have received bone marrow transplants and Parkinson's Disease . NASA was also involved in the development of the insulin pump and the infrared ear thermometer .

So , do you have any products developed by NASA in your home ?
