His parents enjoyed a position in society ; however , shortly after Alfred's birth , problems with money forced his father , an engineer and inventor , to leave for Russia . Fortunately , disappointment turned to opportunity for Alfred's father . He took advantage of the times in Russia and began doing business with the Russian army . Soon his family was able to join him . Like his father , Nobel was interested in chemistry and physics , but he also loved literature . His interest in poetry an unfavourable reaction from his father , who sent his son abroad to study chemical engineering . Eventually Nobel returned to Stockholm , where he set up a laboratory to develop a new kind of explosive called dynamite . After several people were killed in an accident at his lab , guidelines were established by the government . Nobel a reputation as a brilliant engineer and businessman and made a fortune from his inventions . Nobel died in 1896 , and according to his will , his wealth was to be used for annual prizes in different fields . The first Nobel Prizes were awarded in 1901 and have been given ever since .
