If you're terrified of something , is it always a bad thing ? I'm not so sure . I've been scared of things all my life - and I don't just mean the odd or two when I was younger . But I think it's made me who I am today .

Fear has its uses . It keeps us safe , for a start . And I really believe that if we face up to our fears , we can learn from them . That's called , apparently . So , say you're scared of speaking , like most people are . If you take the plunge and give a talk in front of an , you'll probably find it easier next time . And the time after that . Until , it doesn't bother you any more . In fact , you might even enjoy it !

The problem is , though , that fear can also stop us doing things . I know this because I'm frightened of of stuff . I hate heights , for example . The idea of going bungee jumping or skydiving just isn't for me - even though some people love the ( that's the thrill you get out of it ) . I can't stand spiders either . Most of the ones you see in England aren't dangerous , but they still my . And I'd never go travelling in Australia because of the poisonous ones there .

But it's not as simple as saying , 'I'm scared of spiders , so I'll avoid them . ' As soon as I see one , I freeze on the spot . My heart starts pounding and I feel sick . It's a bit like having a . So actually , my fear of spiders is pretty . It stops me enjoying walks in the countryside , and I have to check every room in my house before I go to bed at night .
