There are some differences between regular and irregular verbs, however this one is the principal one.

Live is a regular verb that ends in -e this mean we only add the -d consonant.

Speak is an irregular verb this mean it changes to spoke in past simple tense.

This is a phrasal verb, at the same time its irregulat we only change the verb to: broke, the preposition keep the same.

Hate is a regular verb, that ends in the vowel-e this mean we only add the consonant-d

The word buy is an irregular verb this mean it change completely its form in past simple tense.

Run away is a compound verb formed by a verb and a preposition. In this case we only change the first word run that is irregular verb changes to ran.

As you probably know, eat is an irregular verb and its past form is ate, it remain the same for all the subjects pronouns.

This is one of the rules of conjugation with some regular verbs, we must remember this.
