All news about the ( 1 ) war comes to the people of the town through the bulletin board . Though , it has been bad news only since last two years ; mainly about lost battles , the draft ( a written order ) , the orders of the ( 2 ) officers , etc .
Franz , hurrying on his way to school , wonders what more bad news is there that a crowd has gathered in front of the bulletin board . Blacksmith , Wachter , tries to stop him from hurrying to school , and Franz assumes that he is making fun of him . He keeps going fast to quickly reach his school .

The usual ( 3 ) ( commotion , activity ) is missing like , opening and closing of desks , lesson repeated in ( 4 ) ( unison ) , and teacher's ruler knocking on the table . It is all still and quiet like a Sunday morning .
The students are already seated in their places in the classroom . Franz feels quite ( 5 ) on walking late into the classroom with all eyes looking at him .

M . Hamel , his teacher , kindly allows him to be seated in his place . He is surprised to see that the teacher is wearing his beautiful green coat , his ( 6 ) shirt , and the little black silk cap , all embroidered , that he never wears except on inspection and prize days . The whole school seems strange and serious ( solemn ) . Franz is ( 7 ) surprised to see the village people sitting quietly on the back benches , that are always empty . He sees old Hauser , with his three - cornered hat , the former mayor , the former postmaster , and several others .

M . Hamel announces that this is the last French lesson he shall give all , since the order has from Berlin to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine . He informs them that the new master will join the school from the next day . The news is like a thunderclap for Franz . He ( 8 ) ( blames ) himself for not being attentive to learning French , come his mother tongue , and wasting his time in ( 9 ) activities . His books and M . Hamel , the strict and ( 10 ) teacher , feel like old friends to him , whom he is about to lose .

Franz realizes the villagers are present in the class to thank M . Hamel for his forty years of faithful service , and to show their ( 11 ) for the country that is theirs no more .

M . Hamel criticizes all , including himself , for always ( 12 ) things . He tells all that the Prussians would tease them saying that they pretend to be Frenchmen , and yet they can neither speak nor write their own language . When they still had time , the parents were not ( 13 ) enough to make their children learn . They preferred to put their children to work on a farm or at the mills , so as to have a little more money . The teacher blames himself for the times when he sent his students to water his flowers instead of letting them learn their lessons . He gave them a ( 14 ) too when he wanted to go fishing .

M . Hamel continues saying that the French language is the most beautiful language in the world the clearest , the most logical ; and it must be guarded among French identity as Frenchmen . It would be like a key to their prison , as they would continue to strive to get their freedom people . As long as they remember their language and keep it alive among themselves , they would not forget their ( 15 ) as Frenchmen . It would be like a key to their prison , as they would continue to strive to get their freedom from ( 16 ) imposed on them by their ( 17 ) .

This expression shows the ( 18 ) emotions that even a little boy like Franz can experience , who is unhappy and upset at the fact that he would be deprived of learning his own language . For him , French is as natural to French people as cooing to pigeons . It also shows Franz's defiance to accept the oppressors' ( 19 ) superiority , as they cannot make the pigeons sing in German . There is a limit to which they can exercise their power .

The atmosphere of the classroom is emotionally charged and ( 20 ) . M . Hamel distributes new copies to all , on which words are written in a beautiful round hand France , Alsace , France , Alsace . They look like little flags floating everywhere in the school - room , hung from the rod at the top of their desks . Old Hauser is seen crying . M . Hamel is very pale when he makes an effort to speak , which he cannot as he is choked with emotions . He manages to write " Vive La France ! " ( Long live France ) on the black board and dismisses the class .
