Be sure machine is properly grounded.

Have patient place hands, palms up, under buttocks

Move machine to another location in the room or to a different outlet.

Place electrodes away from bony areas

Increase room temperature, offer blanket

Turn down lights and provide quiet environment; delay EKG until seizure is over

Turn off fluorescent lights and other nonmedical equipment in the room.

Discard dry electrodes. Always store electrodes in airtight containers.

Place machine close to patient and avoid movement of wires during recording

Remove body hair using medical clippers or razor

Reassure patient and encourage slow breaths

Clean and store lead wires carefully to prevent wear.

Check for frayed or broken lead wires and replace

Encourage slow breaths; do not position limb lead electrodes on torso
