a . We use 'how much ? ? ' and 'how many ? ? ' to ask for the quantity of something .
b . We use 'how much ? ? ' with uncountable nouns : How much milk is there ? How much rice do we have ?
c . We use 'how many ? ? ' with countable nouns : How many onions are there ? How many peaches have we got ?

Learn this ! A lot of / much / many = large quantity . A little / a few = small quantity .
a . We use 'a lot of' with countable and uncountable nouns : There's a lot of butter .
