Mr . Smith was an outstanding spy , but his nervous anxiety had him in a state of emotional . He was worried about his upcoming assignment . He needed to sneak into a top - secret government lab and steal research on artificial , limbs . Then , he would rendezvous with his commanding agent to the information he discovered . The conditions for the job were not . For one thing , Mr . Smith would have to make his way past Brutus , the guard who was stationed at the lab's only door . In addition , Mr . Smith would only have 45 minutes to get back out of the lab and make his way to the meeting point . Any slight change or to the plan could lead to complete failure . The day of the job arrived , and Mr . Smith tried to make oatmeal for breakfast , but it wound up being a soupy that tasted like burnt apples . After forcing some down , Mr . Smith left his ramshackle apartment in his run - down , neighborhood and made his was to the sleek research center on the other side of town . He showed the guard his fake identification and was ushered inside . Once he was clear of the guard , he moved with speed and , working his way into the top - secret area and quickly photographing the documents he needed . He left the way he came , scrambling to his car with only a few minutes remaining . He had forgotten , however , about his starter , and the car refused to crank . Cursing himself for not leaving it running as a , Mr . Smith jumped out of the car and ran for the subway . He made it to his rendezvous point , but he was too late . The other agent had already departed . Mr . Smith was fired and forced to take a job as a security guard at Dollar General .
