Multiplicative Identity
The way in which numbers are grouped when added or multiplied does not change the sum or the product. (3 + 6) + 1 = 3 + (6 + 1) (5 • 9) • 2 = 5 • (9 • 2)
When any number is multiplied by zero, the product is zero. 3(0) = 0 0(3) = 0
To multiply a sum inside a parenthesis by a number. 3(4 + x) = 12 + 4 6(y + 6) = 6y = 36
The order in which the numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product. 6 + 9 + 3 = 3 + 6 + 9 4 • 7 • 2 = 2 • 7 • 4 2(4 + 3) = 2(3 + 4)
The property that undoes an operation. 5 + (-5) = 0 (1/3) • 3 = 1
When zero is added to any number, the sum is the number. 5 + 0 = 5 0 + 5 = 5
When any number is multiplied by 1, the product is the number. 8 • 1 = 8 1 • 8 = 8
