Operational Plans

This plan is at the next level and supports the strategic plans by translating them into smaller plans relevant to a specific area of the business. This plan is concerned with the responsibility and functionality of lower-level departments to fulfil their parts of the strategic plan.

These are the on the ground delivery focused to the front line and made by the relevant manager. This plan is focused on the specific procedures and processes that occur within the front-line levels of the business. Managers must plan the routine tasks of the department using a high level of detail. Plans can be either single-use or ongoing plans. Single‐use plans apply to one off activities like a seasonal sale. An on-going plan could be a regular rota or reoccurring stock take on a quarterly basis.

This process of planning is based on certain assumptions about what is likely to occur in the workplace. The plans are made to deal with situations that might crop up if these assumptions turn out to be wrong. This planning is the development of alternative courses of action to be taken if events disrupt a planned course of action. You can act immediately in unforeseen events like natural disasters, strike action or major economic changes.

This plan is created from the top with all aspects of the organisation in mind and focused on mission and values. These will be the vision for the future and associated long term goals. The plan is most likely to foresee up to 10 years into the future. The plan will be provided by the highest-level managers and form the basis for lower level planning.
