The South Korean dance track posted online in July , pushing pop star Psy to worldwide fame . The fact that so many people continued to post own versions of Gangnam Style had played a huge part in the clip's success . It has actually inspired hundreds of copycat clips , from members of the British army , Thai navy Minecraft gamers , among others . Psy's success shows the universal appeal of catchy music and the great horse - riding dance moves " Gangnam Style " refers to a lifestyle associated the Gangnam District of Seoul , where people are trendy , and hip and chase after image , good looks , success and money they associate with the West . Many in the Korean community left scratching their heads as to why this song became so popular outside of the country . Perhaps what Psy brought is the Eastern ideal of connection . One aspect of South Korean culture is that you are made to feel that you are a part of a bigger whole , that you belong . There is a Korean idea called " Jeong " means having a deep and meaningful connection or bond . It is not a feeling or an action , but it describes the space between two or more people . Looking at the copycat Gangnam videos , it is clear that people are connected a joyful spirit of unity and are not shy about looking silly . When given the opportunity maybe we all want to get an imaginary horse and join the fun .
