Ecotourism can be sustainable but it can also be detrimental to the environment. Ecosystems, for example, can be easily polluted, and this affects the habitats of animal and vegetal species negatively. For this reason, communities and organizations work together to reduce the adverse impact of visitors in their natural regions.

Ecotourism is right now one of the most important sectors of tourism industry. International organizations estimate that ecotourism contributes with approximately 25 percent of revenues of tourism in the world. However, ecotourism depends on locations where natural resources are present, so environmental care is one of its most relevant considerations.

Other important aspect to be considered is the money produced by ecotourism. Research shows that a lot of the money involved in the development of travel plans and guided visits does not stay in the regions that host visitors, and that big international companies keep most of the revenues to themselves. This issue harms the local economy of communities which cannot grow and prosper.

Ecotourism has a lot of disadvantages, but it also has the capacity of being beneficial and productive. Through ecotourism people can interact with other cultures and learn a lot about animals, plants and the importance of natural resources.
