"Two weeks later, all I could think about was mechanics, and I couldn't hit a fairway to save my life." Athletes who overtrain find it very difficult to get in the flow. Divot's case is typical, and most researchers believe that too much repetition makes it difficult for the athlete to reduce left-hemisphere brain activity. Athletes think about mechanics (left hemisphere) rather than feel (right hemisphere), and they lose the ability to achieve peak performance. "I was playing well, so I thought with a bit more practice, I could start winning on tour," Divot recalled.
